Bacteria and Paper Towels
A new study from the American Journal of Infection Control found that certain types of bacteria thrive in unused paper towels. These bacteria can be transferred to hands after washing, causing a problem for people in hospitals or those with weakened immune systems.
According to the reports, the concentration of bacteria was much higher in recycled paper towels than wood-pulp based towels. These bacteria may be a product of the bacterial slime found in recycling mills or else bond more easily to recycled paper due to its use of starches and other food fillers. The most common type of bacteria found was Bacillus bacteria, a type of bacteria that is responsible for food poisoning.
However, this is not a reason to avoid paper towel use. Most healthy people won’t be affected by these bacteria. Still, you should be able to trust that your paper needs are met with the highest quality.
