Barry Christenson, our Director of Supply Chain, spends a lot of time on the phone and face-to-face working with our teams in sales, marketing, paper making and paper converting.
For Barry Christenson, supply chain is really all about information flow and identifying and improving against the active constraints to the business. As Director of Supply Chain at von Drehle, he and his team build a plan, then communicate that plan to help reduce and eliminate the roadblocks in the way of a successful execution.
That process means spending a lot of time on the phone and face-to-face working with our teams in sales, marketing, paper making and paper converting. That includes working with team members on production scheduling, fiber procurement, finance, pricing and more.
Barry will celebrate his tenth anniversary at von Drehle on March 1st, 2020, but he’s known both our CEO and COO for more than two decades. When Randy Bergman talked to Barry about a growing company where the owners treated employees like family and where hard work and results were rewarded, he knew it’d be a perfect fit.
According to Barry, “von Drehle has attracted and kept some absolutely incredible people. It’s fun to work with and be challenged by such a committed group of professionals with the experience and character of the von Drehle family.”
When asked who those people are, Barry glowingly describes his supply chain team: Peggy is a seasoned veteran in customer service as well as being intimately familiar with the software backbone of the company, Syspro. Alex Church leverages his jack-of-all-trades background building a master production schedule for all of our converting operations. Jamel and Matthew lead our two primary distribution centers, continuously working on better processes to improve their respective facilities. Tammy Lampley leads our procurement strategy for the fiber that feeds all three of our paper machines. Monika Majewska is the newest member of our supply chain team and brings a fresh and aggressive attitude to help drive our costs down while improving service and quality levels. Brett von Drehle is in the process of managing the transportation piece, and has done an excellent job in this challenging role. “They are all fun characters to work with,” says Barry, “and each brings a really unique personality and set of skills. I enjoy every interaction with them.”
In the ten years Barry has been with von Drehle, he’s seen the company grow from less than 300 employees to 700 team members. “We’ve expanded the breadth and depth of our product offering, clarified our go-to market strategy and focused on building the systems and processes to support future growth, all while maintaining an entrepreneurial spirit.”
When he’s not working, Barry loves spending time outdoors hiking on the incredible trails nearby. He looks forward to exploring this beautiful part of the country more in the coming years with his wife.
